Sakura Japanese Restaurant, Sydney CBD

This place seemed to be a convenient place for CBD workers wanting to grab a quick lunch during the weekdays. There are normally people inside grabbing a quick bite – and from peering into the windows, the place appeared to serve some decent food. Even when I came here on a Sunday, most of the tables were already taken up by diners, notwithstanding that it is located on the more quiet end of Pitt St.

Dinner at Home – Sydney, CBD

Similar to Chat Thai, there is a large glass shop front to allow any passer by to peek through the window and watch the kitchen hand in action. I also noticed the dark woodened furnishings and brick walls inside which screams out Chat Thai. For a while I wondered if this place is owned by the same group. My question was answered though as soon as I skimmed through the menu – while Chat Thai offers the more innovative dishes, Home has on offer the more traditional Thai cuisines.

Hiroshima and Miyajima Island

We made a day trip to Hiroshima via the Shinkansen bullet train. Sitting on the bullet train felt like sitting on a plane. There is a lady wheeling the cart full of snacks and drinks, and at certain carriages, there is even a drink vending machine. Nevertheless we ended up stocking ourselves up for the four hour trip to Hiroshima.

Nazimi Restaurant, Sydney CBD

This place is like a hidden gem along the quiet York St. This restaurant is quite easy to miss as it is located below street level. Inside, whatever little space they have, they manage to utilise the space to full capacity by placing as many tables inside as possible, leaving little room to walk and manouvre around the place.

Exploring Osaka, Japan

Day 2 of my stay in Japan proved to be a bit of a culture shock. Random Japanese announcements in a high pitched voice can even be heard in trains, lifts and even the escalators. Shop assistants would greet you with the standardized high pitched phrase every time you entered or walked out of the shop. Heck, even the rail platforms are well organized with glass barriers which automatically opened in sync with the train doors. I felt like I’m stuck in a time warp travelling a decade into the future where anything goes.

Settling into Osaka, Japan

My first stop in Japan is Osaka. Why did I choose to go to Osaka? Despite Osaka being surrounded by skyscrapers and concrete, it is also known as the food capital of Japan. As a foodie this is the one pit stop which I looked forward to the most.

Flying to Japan with HK stopover, Day 1

I flew to Japan with a stopover in Hong Kong via Cathay Pacific straight after work. Travelling on an overnight flight wasn’t the best idea – I had trouble sleeping and my back was sore with the tiny seats. At least the plane food was more decent than I expected though

A feast for the senses – Sailors Thai

After having bad luck from the feast for the senses deal from one of the other restaurants from before, we decided to go to Sailors Thai instead. Although we came with low expectations due to our last experience with the other restaurant, we were anything but disappointed by the end of the night.
